Some people catch the DIY bug while shopping for replacement windows. It allows you to save money, right? What they don’t know are the unexpected problems that might come up, in terms of proper installation and safety concerns, when you decide to install replacement windows yourself.
Unexpected Problems
Taking accurate measurements is vital to proper window replacement; even a slight variation could result in a botched project. You may not realize that some houses, particularly older ones, may shift and settle over time. These changes in straight lines and dimensions are hard to detect unless you’re a professional. If the window and frame don’t fit tight and flush with the structure, you run the risk of leakage and an unattractive investment.
Potentially Dangerous Project for One Person
The process of replacing windows is often labor-intensive. Most window replacements require an extra set of hands, and the more experienced those hands are the better. This is especially true for large, thick windows. Most windows and frames are heavier than you might imagine.
Loss of Manufacturer’s Warranty
Even if you buy, rent, or borrow the many tools you’ll need to complete the job, you run the risk of losing a valuable manufacturer’s warranty if you attempt DIY replacement of your windows if you make a mistake.
Windows May Not Open and Close Properly
Only a perfect fit will allow your window to open and close properly. If you perform a window replacement yourself, you could end up with a window that doesn’t fit or close properly. These defects produce drafts, costing you more on your utility bills.

Deciding whether or not to replace or repair damaged siding requires being informed about the process and the price. Sometimes repairing and replacing your siding can cost more than the actual installation itself.
When replacing siding, consider the style of siding you have. With overlapping siding, you’ll have to start at the top siding piece and work your way down. Keep in mind that your replacements might not have the same shade as the still intact, sun-faded pieces of your siding. In this case, you may want to have the whole side replaced to match.

What makes modern energy-efficient windows so much more efficient than traditional windows? The answer is found in the low emissivity glass used in the window’s panes and the argon gas that fills the space between those panes. Both of these play an important role in maintaining a home’s indoor temperature and, thus, improving a home’s energy efficiency.
Low Emissivity Glass
Low emissivity, or Low E, glass has been coated with a micro-thin metallic film that enhances its thermal performance. It does so by reducing the transfer of heat—but not light—through the glass. So basically, Low E glass works both ways, keeping heat on the inside during the winter and outside in the summer. The results of this process are increased comfort and lower energy consumption. An additional benefit of Low E glass is that it reflects the ultraviolet rays that can fade your drapes, curtains, and upholstery.
Argon Gas
Normally, the only thing between two glass panes is air. That’s not the case with Low E Glass however. A colourless, safe, odorless, non-flammable, and non-toxic gas named Argon is placed between the panes of Low E glass. When used in conjunction with Low E glass, argon gases help reduce convection activity within a sealed unit and thus improve the window’s energy efficiency.
Modern Energy-Efficient Windows
Together these two features allow the ecoSMART windows to achieve the highest possible Energy Star ratings. On top of these windows’ thermal performance is the added benefit of sound absorption. These windows are capable of blocking 72% of the sun’s heat energy and 90% of its ultra violet light. These windows are also made in an eco-smart fashion. Any waste materials created in the process are recycled, if possible.
