Essential HVAC Maintenance to Keep Your Home Cool This Summer

    Last updated 16 days ago

As the days get longer and the weather warms up, the early signs of summer are here. Before summer arrives in full force, schedule an annual service from a certified HVAC contractor. Before your professional service, here are some steps that you can take to make sure that your HVAC system is in great working order so that you will be able to beat the summer heat:

    Change the Filters

Your HVAC system is designed to filter out particles and other contaminants from the air that enters your home. Over time, your HVAC filters will become clogged with dust and debris. To make sure that your HVAC system is working efficiently, replace any clogged filters with new ones. During the summer, you will need to change the filters at least one more time.

    Check the Condensing System

To create cool air, your HVAC system uses a condensing system, which is located in a large metal box on the outside of your home. During the winter, leaves and other debris can damage and clog the condenser. To check for debris and clean your condenser, remove the metal panels from the outside of the encasement. Using a soft brush or vacuum hose, you can gently remove any debris from the interior coils of the condenser.

    Visually Inspect the System

After you have checked and cleared the interior of the condenser, perform a visual inspection of the exterior of the HVAC system. Check the coolant lines, which run from the condenser into your home, for damage. If any of the foam insulation around the lines has split, you can repair the break with foam insulation sleeves or tape.

Tips for Saving Even More Energy at Home After You Invest in New Windows

    Last updated 21 days ago

Installing well-insulated, energy-efficient windows in your home will drastically reduce your home’s energy consumption. Once you have replaced your windows with energy-efficient models, there are other steps you can take to reduce your energy consumption even further. Here are some great, at-home energy saving tips:

    Turn Down the Heat

The energy required to heat your home and generate hot water makes up a majority of your energy bill. To reduce your energy consumption, turn down the dial on your thermostat and your hot water heater by just a few degrees. Chances are, you won’t feel the difference and you will save energy in the process.

    Invest in Energy-Efficient

Many home appliances drop in energy efficiency after 10 or more years of use. Consider replacing your home appliances such as your hot water heater, dishwasher, or clothes dryer with new, energy efficient models. To help determine what type of appliance is most efficient, look for the ENERGY STAR label.

    Unplug When Not in Use

Devices such as cell phones, televisions, and computers drain energy from your sockets when they are left plugged in and on standby. Instead of leaving your devices plugged in and turned on, unplug and shut down when they are not in use. Additionally, charging cables for cell phones and computers use energy when they are plugged in, whether they are charging a device or not. You can reduce this hidden energy waste by unplugging chargers and storing them when not in use.

If you are looking for a fantastic way to improve your home’s energy efficiency, contact Centra of Vancouver. We service British Columbia with top-quality, custom manufactured windows and a complete line of home renovation services.
